Common questions about anode rod replacement

What does an anode rod do?

The anode rod is a metal rod - usually magnesium or aluminum - inserted into the top of your water heater tank. It corrodes sacrificially, meaning it attracts the corrosive elements in the water so the steel tank walls don't. Once the rod is depleted, the tank itself starts to corrode from the inside.

How often does the anode rod need to be replaced?

Every 4–6 years under normal conditions. Homes with water softeners or very aggressive water chemistry may need replacement every 2–3 years. We inspect the rod during every maintenance visit.

Can a depleted anode rod cause the rotten egg smell?

Yes - this is one of the most common causes of sulfur smell in hot water. When the magnesium rod depletes, the reaction between the remaining rod material and sulfate-reducing bacteria in the water produces hydrogen sulfide gas. Switching to an aluminum/zinc rod often eliminates the odor.

Can I replace the anode rod myself?

Technically yes, but it requires turning off the water supply, partially draining the tank and using a 1-1/16 inch socket with significant torque. The rod port is often seized on older units. We do it in about 30 minutes and make sure it's sealed correctly.

Does replacing the anode rod extend my warranty?

Many manufacturer warranties require documented maintenance including anode rod inspection. Keeping records of rod replacement can support a warranty claim if needed.
