Step 1: Turn Off the Water Supply
Locate the cold water shut-off valve at the top of your water heater and turn it clockwise to close it. This stops water from flowing into the tank and reduces the risk of flooding. If you cannot find or reach the valve, turn off the main water supply to your home.
Step 2: Turn Off the Power Source
For gas water heaters, turn the gas valve to the "off" position. If you smell gas, leave the house immediately and call your gas company. For electric water heaters, turn off the breaker at your electrical panel. Never work on an electric water heater without disconnecting power first.
Step 3: Contain Any Water Damage
If your water heater is leaking, use towels or a wet vacuum to remove standing water. Move any belongings, boxes or stored items away from the area. If the leak is significant, open a hot water faucet somewhere in the house to help drain the tank faster and relieve pressure.
Step 4: Assess the Situation
