    Common questions about electric water heater repair

    Why does my electric water heater have no hot water?
    The most common cause is a failed heating element - usually the upper element, which heats the water first. A tripped high-limit thermostat can also cut all power to the heating elements. We test both elements and both thermostats to find the exact cause.
    How do I reset an electric water heater?
    There's a red reset button on the upper thermostat, behind the access panel. Press it once firmly. If the water heater works but the button trips again, something is causing overheating - usually a failed thermostat. Call us rather than keep resetting it.
    My electric water heater is running constantly - is that normal?
    No. A water heater should cycle on and off as needed. If it runs continuously without getting the water hot, a heating element has likely failed and the other is compensating. We diagnose and replace the failed component.
    My electric water heater has a reset button - should I press it?
    You can try it once. The reset button trips when the water temperature exceeds the safety limit. If it trips again immediately or repeatedly, something is causing overheating - usually a stuck thermostat. Don't keep resetting it without investigating the cause.
    Should I replace both heating elements or just the one that failed?
    On units over 7–8 years old, we often recommend replacing both elements at the same time. If one has failed from age and mineral buildup, the other is usually not far behind. Doing both at once saves a second service call.
    Why does my circuit breaker keep tripping for the water heater?
    A repeatedly tripping breaker usually means a shorted heating element drawing too much current. It can also indicate a failing breaker itself or a loose wiring connection. We diagnose the specific cause - don't keep resetting a breaker that keeps tripping.
    Is it worth repairing an electric water heater vs replacing it?
    If the unit is under 10 years old and the repair is a heating element or thermostat, repair is almost always the right call - it's a relatively inexpensive fix. If the unit is older and has had multiple repairs, or if the tank itself is rusting, replacement makes more sense. We'll give you an honest read on which makes more financial sense.
