- Why does my pilot light keep going out?
- The most common cause is a failed or weakened thermocouple - the safety device that senses whether the pilot is lit. It's an inexpensive part and one of the most common gas water heater repairs we do. A dirty pilot orifice, drafts or a failing gas valve are other possibilities.
- Is it safe to relight my pilot light myself?
- Yes, if you follow the instructions on the label of your unit and you don't smell gas. If you smell gas, don't attempt to relight it - call your gas company and then call us.
- What's the difference between a thermocouple and a thermopile?
- A thermocouple generates a small millivolt signal that holds the gas valve open while the pilot is lit. A thermopile generates more voltage and is used in units with electronic controls or remote thermostats. Both are safety devices - if either fails, the gas valve closes and your pilot won't stay lit.
- My burner fires but shuts off after a few seconds - what's wrong?
- This is usually a thermocouple or thermopile issue, though a failing gas valve can cause the same symptom. It can also be caused by a blocked flue or inadequate combustion air. We diagnose the specific cause before replacing any components.
- Do you work on propane water heaters as well as natural gas?
- Yes. We service both natural gas and propane water heaters. Propane units operate at different pressures and require propane-rated components - we carry parts for both fuel types.
